Moscow Culture (Going out and fashion) by Nikki Johnston

Nikki Johnston talks a little bit about fashion in Moscow and going out around town.

Moscow is one of the biggest fashion hubs in the world, and I was not disappointed upon arrival. Every Russian has their own style but none of them look past the accessories. From what I’ve noticed, summer time looks are very flowing. Sun dresses, long lightweight skirts and loose-fitting tops, finishing off the look with heels, sandals, and even sneakers. Most women add jewelry, blazers, hats, belts and purses to add their own sense of personality to the look. Majority of women have on a full face of makeup and their hair with a bombshell blowout or slicked back pony tail. If they don’t choose this style, the second most popular I’ve seen is similar to what American Hipsters wear.

Mom jeans, chain belts, graphic T-shirts with a pair of sneakers. The women that wear this style usually wear minimal makeup and don’t do too much to their hair. So far, I haven’t noticed anything that stands out in men’s fashion other than jean shorts and the abnormal amount of suits. As I see it, women in Moscow put the way they look first, unlike Southern women. Every big city is going to have more fashion than your everyday small town/city though. I compare Moscow to Los Angeles; the bigger cities are going to dress with more style and designer clothes. When we visited the outside of Moscow, I didn’t see any people wearing designer or accessories, same as my town back home.

Going out in Russia as an American is great, most items on the menu are less than $10 for a whole meal. But to Russians it seems like they make going out a big deal, when they’re out they sit and drink for hours while catching up with friends and family. They make it a more formal event compared to going out being casual to us. I’ve also noticed that Russians tend to stay in and eat rather than going out a few times a week, In America it’s becoming cheaper to eat out than cooking your own food, while in Russia it’s still cheaper to eat in.

But not only are there great restaurants, there are clubs, bars, hookah bars and many sites to visit in the city. The city is alive all hours of the day, but I personally think it’s prettiest at night. All the lights are lit up, local music playing, everyone is hanging out with their friends, it’s overall a great environment to be around.

My most recent favorite activity was visiting the Red Square at light, all the lights were lit up bright and for the most part, was pretty silent. I also enjoyed a bar me and some friends found at the top of a building, it was a little busy, but around 11 it slowed down, and we got to see a beautiful view.
