ВДНХ (VDNKh) by Isabel Klinner

ВДНХ is a park in north Moscow. Over the past fifteen years, this park has seen quite a lot of changes. Today it is one of the most visited parks in the city. Isabel Klinner talks a little bit about the park.

VDNKh is a permanent park and exhibition center that is just outside Moscow’s central city circle. The exhibition center was opened on August 1st, 1939 and hosts about 25 million people a year. To compare this park to something similar in size and attendance rates, this is the Russian version of Disney World. VDNKh is comprised of several pavilions from the union republics and atop of the pavilions are statues of the people in their native clothing.

Recently they have started to revamp and revive the pavilions in the main exhibitions to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the parks opening. After walking past the amazing architecture of the first pavilion called “Central” you approach one of the most beautiful fountains named the “Friendship of the People”. This fountain is comprised of young women from all republics of the USSR in native clothing and symbols of their republic. In total there are 16 golden sculptures on the fountain, and it has recently started to operate again. Along with the first fountain there is a “Stone Flower” fountain which is named after Urals fairy tales and has mosaics and small details along it. VDNKh is filled with much more than fountains and pavilions, there are museums, gardens, parks, and even an aquarium! All of the park can be reached by walking, skating, and the monorail that runs along the park’s length. Overall this park is amazing and is great for all ages and interests because there is a diverse and immense amount of things to see and do while at VDNKh.
